How does life insurance work?

How would your partner support your family if you suddenly passed away unexpectedly? Life insurance is an important form of protection, providing financial security and peace of mind. This type of policy provides a tax-free lump sum to surviving spouses, partners or their families. At Warwickshire Mortgages, we help families with various forms of protection. In this blog, we explain how life insurance works to give you greater clarity.

What is life insurance?

A life insurance policy pays a one-off lump sum when the person named on the policy dies (the policyholder). This policy can help you protect your income, home, and other financial responsibilities. The cash sum can be used to pay off an outstanding mortgage balance and other debts, as well as covering household bills and everyday living costs. Some people use the money to pay funeral expenses, which can be costly if there’s no provision left in a Will.

One of the main benefits of having life cover is the reassurance that your family will be protected in the event of your death. As well as ongoing living expenses, the lump sum can provide a useful financial buffer for additional costs such as childcare or education fees.

If you’re self-employed, life insurance can be a vital form of protection as you may not have employee benefits such as death in service. You can also find policies that offer a premium waiver, so your cover doesn’t lapse if you’re temporarily unable to make your payments.

Are there different life insurance policies?

There are different types of life insurance and you can choose a single policy or a joint one with a partner. Whole of life insurance covers the entirety of someone’s life, while term level insurance covers a period of time. You can also take out decreasing life insurance to cover your mortgage with the payout reducing over time in relation to your outstanding balance.

Taking out a life insurance policy to make sure your mortgage is covered will help you protect your home. If you rely on two incomes for your monthly repayments, then it’s crucial to consider a life cover policy, especially if you have children. You can also combine life policies with critical illness or income protection for an additional level of cover.
